Why I decided to switch to a natural deodorant (and what I tried that didn't work).
I first made the switch to a "natural" deodorant long before I formulated my own, because I kept reading about harmful ingredients in conventional deodorant, such as phthalathes, aluminum, and parabens, JUST to name a few. I also noticed that my conventional deodorant was just not working. I was also dead set against using any antiperspirants because they actually stop you from sweating by blocking your pores (and sweating is your body's natural way of detoxing as well as keeping you cool).
So, I set off to the grocery store (and Amazon) to try a few different brands. Imagine my disappointment when they, like all of the conventional deodorants I was using before, didn't work (and I live in Texas, where it is HOT and we sweat, a lot!), and I kept having to try different ones. I don't know about you, but nobody wants to smell MY b.o. The final straw for me formulating my own was when I tried a popular brand with baking soda on a freshly shaved armpit and got a burn similar to a chemical or carpet burn and it HURT. I spent the rest of the weekend nursing my armpit with a calendula cream & homemade colloidal oatmeal mask.
Once I decided to formulate my own, I started researching different types of ingredients and forms (did I want a stick? a cream?). Two things I knew for sure: it would NOT contain baking soda and would also contain colloidal oatmeal. I eventually settled on a cream deodorant and loved it even more than I expected. It did take about a week or two to transition (I had already gone through most of the initial detox period when I was trying out other natural deodorants), but it was SO worth it. I have been using the same 2 ounce jar for over 2 1/2 months now and have about 1/4 of a jar left.
